The Lancaster Redskin & The Buffalo News - A Paper Unwilling to See the Forest

Dear Mrs. Robinson;

In your May 11th Buffalo News article regarding the May 17th elections you claim that the "hostile divide over the mascot change has never been bridged"; and that this year's election centers on 'bitter' pro and con-Redskins "factions" which - according to you - has produced a "toxic" climate rife with "Trumpesque" behavior by "warring factions".  You cap your soap-opera-esq prognostications by claiming - without a source - that "...some Redskins hard-liners are pushing for the return of their mascot."

This last bit of journalistic soliloquy makes us want to ask two questions:

  1. What makes you think that the sentiment of having a native warrior represent a school is "hard line" when the vast majority of Lancasterians and Native Americans alike believes is not a problem despite your paper's slander-and-shame campaign and;
  2. Why haven't you heeded the many written requests from the town's citizens to stop using the loaded term "mascot" when you know the school didn't have a mascot, they had a logo.  Even your own BN put this request on behalf the town in print last March; why do you continue to use the misinformed term the casino-mogul "Not Your Mascot" founder Ray Halbritter continues to push?

But the biggest issue with your "story" is you once again identified the Redskins issue as a sole and unique issue unto itself, seemingly immune from any social context or leadership issue, is - at a minimum - a journalistic example of being 'unable to see the forest for the trees' or - due to a political agenda - avoiding the forest altogether.

You see Mrs. Robinson, the Redskin's ambush and rush to judgement (despite promises to wait a year and become educated) was simply a cowardly symptom of a corrupt cabal in which integrity, values and vision were jettisoned years ago.

This is a community with 5/7ths of a school board, and a newspaper, which continues to attempt to shout down or shame the opinions of nearly 80 percent of Lancasterians who voted "no" when asked if the school board made the right decision to remove the honorable Redskin.

Keep in mind these are the same Lancastarians who would like to honesty discuss Common Core, Transgender Bathrooms, Exploding Budgets and details of the Vengeful Investigations where thousands were mindlessly spent to chase what might have been a $50 campaign over payment. 'Nope', declares your story, 'it has to be that these folks are just simple minded racists who are still chasing a High School mascot fantasy refusing to grow up' ... right?

Today's School Board is the "Forest" Mrs. Robinson. It's a dense, rich and - for a good journalist - a beckoning strategic news story that you've dutifully avoided. It's a forest which is screaming to be honestly explored. Perhaps if you find the courage to venture in, you'll find the debilitating forest fungus called 'misinformation', a wood boring beetle called 'censorship' and a root disease called agenda 'group-think'.

Here's a video of several hundred young Lancasterians who, against policy, charged out of class last year at risk of detention to vocally convey their distaste when activists along with the Buffalo News attacked and then eradicated their long-time school representative all while attempting to shame Redskins supporters.

So yes, you've clearly identified one VICTIM of the rotting forest, but the cause of death was not the Redskins logo -- it's the myopia which seems to keep some members of the 4th Estate and their political acolytes, from seeing clearly.

In the meantime, other school boards have become educated without the "help" of papers like the Buffalo News or the cash "rewards" provided by the aforementioned "Mascot" provocateur Mr. Halbritter.

Indeed, within the past few months alone the Redskins of McLoud, Oklahoma easily survived a Lancaster-style assault and the Redmen of Tewskbury, Mass., demonstrated what it is to make a rational and strategic approach in overwhelmingly deciding to keep their symbol too - they knew the differences in term use, what a homonym is and the fact that their representative never meant anything but brave warrior not anything associated with "race".

So, yes Mrs. Robinson, outside the circulation radius of your paper, Americans have a voice and their will is being listened to.  Isn't it time that the Lancaster School Board starts falling in line with the rest of the nation in attending to the citizen's voices?

While Karen Robinson keeps trying to "stir the pot" regarding the non existent "mascot", she is ignoring the larger issues that are afflicting Lancaster. Five members of a school board that want to silence and censor their constituents, waste the taxpayers money, and turn a deaf ear to anything that doesn't fit their agenda are far more pressing than rehashing the Redskin name. If people would just educate themselves on that issue we wouldn't be revisiting it, but reinstating it!

Woah! I’m really loving the template/theme of this website. It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s challenging to get that “perfect balance” between usability and visual appeal. I must say you have done a amazing job with this. Also, the blog loads extremely quick for me on Internet explorer. Superb Blog!|
