Notes for Conrad - Beware of the Activist's Favorite Post-Redskin Trophy Name "Red Hawks"

Cash, Politics and Appropriations

A Conrad-centered Timeline binding names, dates and connections behind the Redskins and the activist’s favorite name for changed schools - The Redhawks.

Leaders who would have kept the Conrad Redskins, should rapidly plan now to engage in the re-name process or fall victim to it.

Below is a list of names, dates and occurrences which connects some of the key federal level politicians, the lead Native American casino “boss” Ray Halbritter to the activist movement to rid non-natives of any native name as part of the organized and $17B Adidas Corp-backed name change movement.

It’s important to remember that there aren’t any “RedHawks” in nature – it’s a contrived name that, in this case, represents a group of Culture-Centered Native actors and artists who reside in N.Y. State and who also received Federal Funds. To many, when a school switches to “RedHawks”, it represents a DeColonization victory – a mark of achievement for the radical movement where the predominate “race” is the measure as to whether a school should be “allowed” to keep their name.

In 2009, Mr. Halbritter of New York attended a conference at the Interior Department with President Obama present. Soon after this meeting, the New York Chapter of the Native American REDHAWKS commit to an annual “cultural engagement” at President Obama’s New York college alma matter – Columbia University starting in April 2010. Per their recent tradition, The REDHAWKS recently presented annual “show” at Columbia.

Jan 27, 2010. Senator Harry Reid meets with Lori Gilbert, board member for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), “To examine the role of public broadcasting in rural areas.”

2010 - Discussions in NY State heat up where the Democrat-led state government would abandon the Native Casino monopoly in 2012 by opening up the gaming industry to non-native entities. Native Casino leaders are furious - begin to fight back against the state's Democrat leaders and their proposals. In 2002, the tribes had signed a 21-year compact with the Pataki administration, allowing it to retain exclusivity in Western New York. As the politics of the event heat up, simultaneous name-change pressure on High Schools begins in earnest.

Feb, 2011, Suddenly and despite Maine’s Wiscasset residents voting 503-128 against the change, the school board, under pressure, voted to remove the Redskins logo citing, amongst other contextual issues, that the “mascot” has created an unsafe environment for their children.

August 2011, Mr. Halbritter attends a White House meeting on economic development. In February 2012, Mr. Halbritter attended a $15,000 to $35,000 per ticket Washington fundraiser for President Obama.

Jan 4, 2012, New York State's Gov Cuomo floats idea of private casinos where only tribes, such as the Seneca Nation, had exclusive rights. Robert Odawi Porter, president of the Seneca Nation, said "If the exclusivity is violated, it would cause significant harm to our existing businesses."

May 2012, barely half (53%) of Natick High School, in Massachusetts, votes Red Hawks as new “mascot” name where they were not allowed to vote for their previous Redmen name. Out of 1,500 potential voters at the school only half (750) cast ballots using a “proscribed” name – the rest ignored. Interestingly, the name “Knights” was the second place name and similar names would show up at later times in other Redmen/Redskin schools.

May 9th, 2013. Mo-HAWKS enter into talks with NY Governor Cuomo who uses the threat of voting in private casinos in an attempt to collect $59 million owed to the state – Governor uses incentive to collect saying he will not building casinos near tribes in “good standing with the state.” Ultimately Cuomo backs Nov ballot which was passed in 2013 allowing for non-native competitive casinos to challenge the once exclusive NA casinos. Seneca’s and many other tribes are not happy.

May 14th, 2013. Only days later, Syracuse.Com reports: “Cooperstown schools changing Redskins nickname to get $10K from Oneida Indian Nation.” Halbritter presents a check for $10,000 to the Cooperstown Central School District. School teams renames to HAWK-EYES.

June, 2013. An official from the New York State Office of Native American Services calls a Canisteo-Greenwood High School leader in a push to remove the Redskins logo.

August, 2013, President Obama selects, and Harry Reid’s senate approves, Nevada native Lori Gilbert to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s CPB Board of Directors. Gilbert’s CPB and the Governor’s NY State’s Arts council approves grants and funding to New York State’s Native American REDHAWK organization who then promote:

“…educational programs in the tri-state area. Participants enjoy a unique opportunity to address prior notions they may have had about Native Peoples. We are also proud of our collaborative efforts with ...government organizations.”

Oct, 23, 2013. NBC’s Bob Costas attacks Redskins name on national TV only days before midterm elections while highlighting a HAWKEYE jersey featuring President Obama’s name. NBC fails to disclose its recent and significant business ties with Mr. Halbritter.

Nov 13, 2013. President Obama presented new HAWKEYES jersey by Halbritter at the White House – President thanked for help in changing Redskins name at Cooperstown, NY.

Dec 19, 2013. Senator Reid calls for changing the NFL’s Redskins logo saying, “We live in a society where you can't denigrate a race of people.”

March 2013, Washington, D.C. – The National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) has announced the recipient of the organization’s prestigious Indian Country Leadership Awards. That is Senator Patty Murray (D – WA) who has a Redskin High School near her Seattle office in Port Townsend, Wa.

May 2014, Indian Country Leadership Award winner Patty Murray signs letter as one of all Democrat Senators (answering to Harry Reid and President Obama) calling for the end of the use of Redskins.

May 6th 2014. Halbritter attends meeting in Albany NY, convinces lawmakers to back his name change campaign, "We shouldn't have to put forth this resolution," said Democratic Assemblyman Keith Wright after the meeting. "The word is absolutely offensive to the Native American community and beyond."

Jun 03, 2014, Bedford Road College replaces Redmen logo with REDHAWKS

June 25, 2014, Western Canada High School replaces Redmen with REDHAWKS

June 19th, 2014. A month after signing the letter to abolish the Redskins, Sen-D Patty Murray’s home state Port Townsend High School in Washington discards their 88 year old Redskins name. Eventually it is named REDHAWKS.

Dec 8th, 2014. Oklahoma City High School’s board votes to eliminate their REDSKINS name. In

February of 2015, the school’s committee recommends REDHAWKS amongst three other options.

February, 2015, Activist and radio show host John Kane, a Mo-hawk Native whose tribe was hurt financially by the Governor’s private casino bill passing in Nov 2013, openly campaigns against non-natives using any Native American logo or image. He recommends and pushes only one name for Lancaster, the REDHAWKS.

March 2015, The Lancaster School Board changes earlier promises not to change the school’s logo at least until the next year and unanimously strips the students of their beloved Redskins logo. A LSB leader cites part of the decision was the fear of threats to students (albeit unfounded). This reason was eerily similar to those cited as a reason in 2011, during the Wiscasset name change campaign and also similar in its “empty threat” rouse as the U.S. Trademark and Patent case against the NFL’s Redskins produced no official complaint against the name had ever been filed before action was taken. Also similar to Lancaster’s, was the desire of the Wiscasset residents who voted 503-128 against the school board name change, Lancaster’s residents voted in a similar ratio in the Lancaster Bee’s survey to keep their logo.

March 2015, WBEN’s Tom Bauerle declares on his broadcast that he has solid sources and inside information telling him that the Lancaster Schools will become the REDHAWKS.

May 2015, the LSB allows the students to submit non-native designs for voting but not for final approval. Polling conducted by local news stations show that amongst the seven designs “chosen” by the LSB, REDHAWKS is the clear leader. However, the Lancaster SB declared that no name submitted would have any overtones or association with Native Americans – REDHAWKS is, however inexplicably, allowed to be part of the voting.

October 2015, California Governor Jerry Brown signs AB-30 “outlawing” the name Redskins in California Schools. Prior to this vote, Adidas Shoe Company had made quiet donations to several of the California State Legislators who would be voting. Ray Halbritter of New York takes part in the push for the bill.

October 2015, European shoe giant Adidas (named after its Nazi party member founder “Adi”) joins in the with President in announcing that schools with Native Names will now be “helped” to change them with monetary and design incentives.

October, 2015, President Obama calls for increased NA “Sovereignty” where the only Federal Bill with that theme – the Tribal Labor Sovereignty Act – would ultimately strip NA Casino workers of NLRB workplace safety protections (amongst others) while simultaneously abandoning $$ millions in pending litigation against the NA Casino industry ultimately directly benefiting the name-change leader and politically connected Mr. Ray Halbritter of the Oneida Nation.

December 2015, Natives stand up to the national change the name campaign in Oklahoma – describe the honorable meaning of Redskins as painted warriors – and the school board votes to keep their name. Ray Halbritter’s newspaper, Indian Country Today, follows up with a story accusing the residents and school board of being racists.

January 2016, Activist and radio show host John Kane, a Mo-hawk Native and national DeColonization leader, reaches into Tewksbury and campaigns against the town’s non-natives using their Native American Redmen logo. He connects with several Tewskbury residents online and begins building momentum, and a team, for an organized name change push.

February 2016, community online voting for changing the Tewksbury RedMen logo begins where – predictably – “RedHawks” appears as one of the three choices.

Keep in mind that REDHAWKS are the name of a Senator Reid-backed, federally funded, New York State NA “cultural” group who say they ‘are proud of their collaborative efforts with government organizations’. They are tied into the allies of the President, his financial backers, the DeColonization “enemies” of the Redman/Redskins name and will stop at nothing in removing native names and symbols from those who are not of the “correct” race. In this spirit, Redskin high schools in Washington State and Arizona – have been able to defend their name successfully because the majority student population is native.

It’s notable that the New York REDHAWKS NA group is directly support by Obama’s nominated and Harry Reid/Democrat Party approved “home-state CPB official” Lori Gilbert who has provided thousands of dollars to the REDHAWKS. The REDHAWKS also receive New York State taxpayer funding where NY State politicians have openly attacked the Redskins name like Democratic State Assemblyman Keith Wright.

As a final bit of intrigue, the U.S. copyright for REDHAWKS was filed by Stephen R. Baird who not only brought the first trademark case against the NFL's Redskins but is also the original “Name Change” advocate Susan Harjo's attorney. Susan Harjo, a famous anti-Redskin activist, was an originator of the Native art and culture movement in New York - setting the stage for today's NY REDHAWKs.

There’s much more to this story – but keep in mind this is a national movement and nothing is happening by chance. It’s MONEY, POLITICS, GET OUT THE VOTE and claims of RACISM that is the fuel on this cultural fire. It will make us unnecessarily divide, degrade as nation which should be colorblind and connected - not divided and artificially shamed

False!!! I am full blooded Navajo from the largest Native American reservation and I DO NOT find the name or the logo offensive. I take great pride in knowing a Native American image represents a true real Native American.
